Our Rig
Our Class C Motorhome is a 2019 Thor Chateau 31W that we call Kokopelli, or Koko for short. It is built on the Ford E450 Chassis and is powered by the gas Ford V10. It gets 6 – 8 mph, depending on whether we are towing our Jeep.
We have modified Koko, including installing a Permanent Polyurea Roof that is guaranteed to withstand 2-inch hail and does not require the annual maintenance the stock roof requires.
We also replaced the underpowered and poorly engineered Schwintek Slide mechanism that failed on us last Winter in Silverton, Texas. According to most techs, that slide was not powerful enough to manage our 16-foot whole-side slide. We had a newer and more appropriate slide installed early last Spring while staying at Lake Ray Roberts. This new slide is by Vroom and has taken the fear out of moving it in or out.
Check out Patriots RV if you want information about these modifications.
We tow our 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, named Nakai. We purchased the Jeep before we got Nakai to bird along the Texas Gulf Coast. But it has proven invaluable for exploring the back trails of the Southwest and Northwest. It allows us to fulfill its name, Nakai, which is Navajo for wanderer.
We have also bought some travel essentials that make our travel more enjoyable. The first was a Garmin RV 785, which allows us to route on roads that are appropriate for our length, height, and weight. When towing, we cannot drive in reverse, so it is important that we stick to roads that are wide enough to handle our load.
We also purchased a portable Traeger Smoker, which allows us to enjoy good, slow-smoked BBQ while on the road. This is the perfect companion for our Royal Gourmet Tailgating Grill and Griddle, which provides the BTUs and space to operate an outdoor kitchen.
Last winter, when we were stranded in Silverton, TX, with a broken slide, we risked running low on propane for heat. I purchased an Extra LP Tank with Stanbroil Propane Brass Tee with Four Ports that would allow us to have heat when the tank ran empty. We now carry the extra tank with us to run our Fire Pit and Grill and provide a backup supply of propane.
Many gadgets and accessories make our lives more comfortable on the road. If you are interested in exploring these, check out Amazon by searching for RV Accessories.
